Today there is a humanitarian crisis affecting the Pacific Afro-Colombian communities as the magnitude and horror of the events have stretched the cultural mechanisms of caring beyond the breaking point, and yet the government continues to downplay the importance of the crisis. The most affected are the women and children of color. An effective and realistic response to the crisis has been hampered by the historical prejudice and marginalization shown toward the Pacific region.
several Latinos and Latinas residing in Northern California, with the guidance of UC Davis assistant professor of Sociology, Natalia Deeb-Sossa, have planned a BENEFIT DINNER and cultural evening for the displaced women of the Chocó to be held Saturday, October 27, 2007 in the social hall of the davis community church, 412 C St. from 4:00 to 8:oo PM.
The event will feature typical food from the area, music, dance, the sale of handicrafts, an auction, the presentation of a documentary, and time for discussion and questions.
TICKETS FOR THE BENEFIT DINNER, from 4:30 to 6PM, cost $30 per person. Tickets at reduced price ($5 per person) are available for those who only wish to attend the cultural portion, from 6 to 8:30 PM (documentary, music, dance and auction).
The totality of the income from the event will provide seed money for establishing a WOMENS BANK in the CHOCO.
